What to Do If You Hate the Idea of Going to the Gym

If even the thought of going to the gym makes you cringe a little—you’re not alone. I’ve talked to so many people who say, “Gyms just aren’t for me,” and honestly? I get it. Maybe it’s the loud music, the confusing machines, the overly intense vibes, or just feeling like everyone knows what they’re doing except you. Whatever your reason, if the word “gym” brings up more dread than motivation, this is for you.

So, You Hate the Gym. I Get It.

Let me tell you something I don’t usually lead with: I didn’t always love the gym either. Before owning one, I was just like a lot of folks—walking into a gym felt awkward, overwhelming, and weirdly performative. It felt like everyone had six-pack abs and knew exactly what to do while I was just trying to figure out where to stand. And that stuck with me. That’s why, when we built CrossFit 1209, we did it differently. We designed a space where people don’t need to prove anything. Where it’s okay to start where you are and be a beginner. Where you don’t need to love the gym—you just need to give yourself a chance to feel better in your own body.

You’re Not Lazy—You Just Haven’t Found the Right Fit Yet

It’s so easy to beat yourself up for not sticking to a routine, but here’s the truth: people aren’t “lazy” when it comes to working out—they’re usually just uninspired or unsupported. Think about it: if every gym you’ve walked into has made you feel judged, ignored, or overwhelmed, why would you want to go back? That’s not a failure on your part—it’s a signal that you haven’t found a place that clicks. The right gym won’t make you feel like you have to drag yourself there. It’ll feel like a place where people know your name, meet you where you are, and actually want to see you win—at your pace.

If the Gym Has Felt Like a Chore, Maybe You’ve Been Sold the Wrong Idea

Somewhere along the line, we were sold this idea that fitness has to be miserable to be effective. That if you’re not dripping sweat or nearly passing out, you’re doing it wrong. But that’s just not true. Movement can (and should) feel good. It can be something you look forward to—not dread. Our workouts at CrossFit 1209 are intense, sure, but they’re also fun, varied, and scaled to your level. We don’t punish people with exercise. We invite them into a new way of moving that feels doable, empowering, and yes—even enjoyable. If your past gym experiences felt like torture, that’s not your fault. You were probably in the wrong place with the wrong message.

The Difference Between Showing Up and Belonging

You can go to a gym and still feel like an outsider. That’s a tough pill to swallow, especially when you’re already nervous. At our gym, we’re intentional about making sure people feel like they belong—not just that they “fit in.” There’s a big difference. Belonging means someone notices when you’re gone. It means you feel safe asking questions, celebrating wins, or even saying, “Hey, I’m having a rough day.” We’re not just a gym—we’re a group of people who care about each other. And that community piece? That’s what keeps people coming back long after the new-year motivation wears off.

Still Not Sure? That’s Okay. Let’s Talk About It.

You don’t have to decide anything today. You don’t even have to like the idea of the gym right now. But if there’s a small part of you that’s curious—or just tired of feeling stuck—I’d love to talk. No pressure, no sales pitch. Just a conversation about what you need, what’s been hard, and how we might be able to help. If you’ve hated the gym until now, maybe it’s time to try one that’s built for real people living real lives. We’re here when you’re ready.
